Mick Clegg with Kyle Howarth - British under-21 Speedway Champion.Mick Clegg with Kyle Howarth - British under-21 Speedway Champion.Kyle Howarth (Speedway) came down to the gym on Friday to show me his British U21 winners trophy.

The 21 year old won in great style on Wednesday night at Coventry’s Brandon Stadium.

Kyle had won using a second bike after his main was damaged after an accident in the first lap of the race after which the race was then restarted.

The second time he had a bit more work to do to make the finish line ahead of Robert Lambert.

This win at the British Championship means that Kyle will represent Great Britain in this year’s World U21 Championship qualifying rounds.

Mick Clegg celebrates expanding the SPI/Elite Lab with a champagne picnic

Mick Clegg takes possession of the new unit based 500 yards from his SPI Lab in Portland Mill, Greater Manchester.

This comes at an exciting part in Mick's life as he expands his SPI business with the new unit eventually housing a new and expanded SPI lab incorporating many of Mick's modern technologies.

The new unit, in Ashton-Under-Lyne, will eventually become Mick's new dedicated SPI Lab with an increased range of fitness and training technologies as well as home to his new training business venture.

Muscle & Fitness UK online talks to Mick about the start of the football season.

Mick Clegg, the renowned coach shares his know-how on developing power and strength for both laymen and elite athletes. Increasing your strength and power can bring incredible gains—just ask Aaron Cook. "When I first started working with Aaron, he was this young lad who was a technical and creative genius in the arena of taekwondo, but a borderline wimp. Now he’s European champion and one of the very best in the world, but I still remind him he was once a borderline weakling. Fortunately for me he agrees!"

"Sowing the Seed of Speed"

"WORKING for 11 years as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for one of the world’s biggest football clubs, Manchester United, during a period in which the Red Devils dominated the game with players like Roy Keane, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, is just about as exciting as it gets as far as jobs in the fitness industry go. But, as Richard Bevan finds out in the latest of our Behind the Stars features, Mick Clegg has something that’s arguably even more thrilling going on in his rough and ready gym in the north of England. He’s pioneering na new methodology of elite training that focuses on the development of faster cognitive awareness and reaction times to “produce a super powered brain for athletic performance”, in conjunction with plyometric, functional and traditional training. It’s something Mick calls the ‘Seed of Speed’ and it’s gaining attention from a host of top level athletes as the 55-year-old follows his dream of nurturing 'the next Ronaldo'".

Switching on to fitness

Mick Clegg features in the Manchester Evening News.

He has trained stars like David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs. Now, coach Mick Clegg believes he has the technology to hone the skills of athletes of all abilities. Clegg, who owns the Olympic Sports Gym, in Ashton-under-Lyne, was strength and conditioning coach at Manchester United from 2000 to 2011. He has secured the exclusive UK rights to the fitLight system, which was originally developed in Canada and comprises eight LED lights that can be placed in different positions and used as targets.

Using a control unit, a coach can design a bespoke training routine to focus on speed, strength, reaction time, vision training or whatever specific needs the athlete has. The lights are used as targets which are positioned around a room and the athlete must hit them with their hands or feet whenever they light up. Clegg says the system can be programmed to replicate movement patterns from any sport and the it collects data to measure the athlete’s performance generally, or after and injury. The fitLight is aimed at schools, gyms, sports clubs and even individuals.

It is already in use by the English Football Association, clubs Manchester United, Liverpool and Sunderland and Scottish Taekwondo.

Sky Sports News Special Report on Aaron Cook featuring Mick Clegg

Manchester United coach aids Aaron Cook Olympic gold hunt.

AARON COOK says he's back on course for Olympic taekwondo gold — thanks to the help of Manchester United's pioneering fitness coach.  Cook, 20, quit the British Taekwondo high performance squad in June after a disappointing defense of his World Championship crown in South Korea, where he crashed out in the first round.

Since then he's moved back in with his parents in Dorset and has won four out of his last five competitions including the British Open two weeks ago, where he beat Craig Brown in the -80kg final.

The United fan also takes weekly trips to Mike Clegg's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton-Under-Lyne, where he trains using state-of-the-art machines designed to improve his hand-eye coordination, agility, speed and strength. Cook believes it is an approach that could give him the edge for next year's Games. He said: "Mike's got some fantastic equipment that is really helping me improve in the sport in ways I hadn't thought possible".

Warrington Wolves with coaches Mick Clegg & Steven CleggWarrington Wolves with coaches Mick Clegg & Steven CleggWarrington Wolves start training at OSG including use of the S.P.I. Lab

Warrington Wolves have developed a strong association and relationship with professional strength and conditioning coach Mike Clegg.

The first team squad were recently put through their paces at Mike's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton as they prepared for the Qualifying Semi-Final and aim to book their place in this year's Grand Final at Old Trafford. The gym is renowned for assisting a wide range of people from working with professional stars including players from Manchester United to encouraging fitness throughout those in the community. The players were given use of the weights, the strong man equipment and the high tech neurotracker machine which trains reaction time and peripheral vision.

Chris Baron, Wolves' head of strength and conditioning, said: "The main reason behind the visit was to give the players the opportunity to experience something different as well as a bit of mental stimulation for them. They've been training at Padgate all year and it was good to experience a different gym as well as different training and coaching too as Mike delivered the session. We had different equipment at our disposal adding variety to the session".

Michael and Steven have the unique opportunity to train another Olympic hopeful, the Taekwondo Gold medalist Aaron Cook. Aaron, already holding several gold medals, left team GBs coaching programme in June to undertake his own training regime.

Aaron is a strong contender for the 2012 Olympic Games Taekwondo event and signs are looking good for another gold for the 20 year old Power Rangers fan. In October 2011 at the British International Taekwondo Championships Aaron won another gold medal beating the competition to first place.

As well as using the main gym at his Olympic Sports Gym Complex they are also giving Aaron the full advantage of the specialist equipment in the S.P.I. laboratory.
