Mick Clegg features in the Manchester Evening News.

Switching on to fitness

He has trained stars like David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs. Now, coach Mick Clegg believes he has the technology to hone the skills of athletes of all abilities. Clegg, who owns the Olympic Sports Gym, in Ashton-under-Lyne, was strength and conditioning coach at Manchester United from 2000 to 2011. He has secured the exclusive UK rights to the fitLight system, which was originally developed in Canada and comprises eight LED lights that can be placed in different positions and used as targets.

Using a control unit, a coach can design a bespoke training routine to focus on speed, strength, reaction time, vision training or whatever specific needs the athlete has. The lights are used as targets which are positioned around a room and the athlete must hit them with their hands or feet whenever they light up. Clegg says the system can be programmed to replicate movement patterns from any sport and the it collects data to measure the athlete’s performance generally, or after and injury. The fitLight is aimed at schools, gyms, sports clubs and even individuals.

It is already in use by the English Football Association, clubs Manchester United, Liverpool and Sunderland and Scottish Taekwondo.

Manchester United coach aids Aaron Cook Olympic gold hunt

AARON COOK says he's back on course for Olympic taekwondo gold — thanks to the help of Manchester United's pioneering fitness coach.

Cook, 20, quit the British Taekwondo high performance squad in June after a disappointing defence of his World Championship crown in South Korea, where he crashed out in the first round.

Since then he's moved back in with his parents in Dorset and has won four out of his last five competitions including the British Open two weeks ago, where he beat Craig Brown in the -80kg final.

The United fan also takes weekly trips to Mike Clegg's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton-Under-Lyne, where he trains using state-of-the-art machines designed to improve his hand-eye coordination, agility, speed and strength.

Cook believes it is an approach that could give him the edge for next year's Games. He said: "Mike's got some fantastic equipment that is really helping me improve in the sport in ways I hadn't thought possible."

Warrington Wolves start training at OSG including use of the S.P.I. Lab

Warrington Wolves have developed a strong association and relationship with professional strength and conditioning coach Mike Clegg.

The first team squad were recently put through their paces at Mike's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton as they prepared for the Qualifying Semi-Final and aim to book their place in this year's Grand Final at Old Trafford. The gym is renowned for assisting a wide range of people from working with professional stars including players from Manchester United to encouraging fitness throughout those in the community. The players were given use of the weights, the strong man equipment and the high tech neurotracker machine which trains reaction time and peripheral vision.

Chris Baron, Wolves' head of strength and conditioning, said: "The main reason behind the visit was to give the players the opportunity to experience something different as well as a bit of mental stimulation for them. They've been training at Padgate all year and it was good to experience a different gym as well as different training and coaching too as Mike delivered the session. We had different equipment at our disposal adding variety to the session."

Aaron Cook

Michael and Steven have the unique opportunity to train another Olympic hopeful, the Taekwondo Gold medalist Aaron Cook. Aaron, already holding several gold medals, left team GBs coaching programme in June to undertake his own training regime.

Aaron is a strong contender for the 2012 Olympic Games Taekwondo event and signs are looking good for another gold for the 20 year old Power Rangers fan. In October 2011 at the British International Taekwondo Championships Aaron won another gold medal beating the competition to first place.

As well as using the main gym at his Olympic Sports Gym Complex they are also giving Aaron the full advantage of the specialist equipment in the S.P.I. laboratory.
